Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage

North Carolina Attorney for Accident Injury Victims

The facts are that you were hurt by another motorist, that you were severely injured and that your medical bills are piling up. So what happens when the driver who hit you does not have enough insurance to cover your injuries, medical bills and lost wages?

Many people assume that if they are hurt in a motorcycle or car accident, the other driver's insurance company will cover all of their injuries, medical bills and lost wages. That is always the case, especially when an individual has been seriously injured. In North Carolina, a driver has to buy only $30,000.00 of liability insurance to cover someone they hurt in an accident. Unfortunately, $30,000.00 may not be nearly enough money to pay for medical bills, lost wages, and injuries that an individual has suffered due to a motorcycle or car accident caused by someone else. Furthermore, there are also many uninsured drivers who cause accidents.

You can protect yourself from these situations ahead of time. Your own motorcycle or car insurance company offers uninsured motorist coverage to protect you when the person causing your accident has no insurance and underinsured motorist coverage to protect you when the person causing your accident has too little insurance to cover how badly you have been hurt. Your insurance company offers this type of insurance as protection for you because there are a lot of drivers out there with very little or no insurance. Getting uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage as part of your motorcycle or car insurance is fairly inexpensive, particularly when weighed against the cost of getting into an accident where the other driver has little or no insurance coverage. Protective Measures to Take Now

Before you are involved in a car crash, truck wreck or motorcycle accident, it is prime time to review your insurance policy. What level of underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage do you carry? Is it enough to cover you if you were seriously injured in an accident? Because motorcyclist and motorist can be seriously injured in accidents, talk to your insurance agent about the benefits of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. As an experienced lawyer, I strongly suggest you consider raising it as high as you can afford. Though I hope you never need to use this coverage, it is one of the least expensive insurances and it can provide one of the greatest benefits.

If you are unsure as to what your insurance policy covers or if your injury-related expenses go beyond the other driver's coverage, contact me. I will review your policy and research all the options to collect from as many polices as you have right to.
